If you are thinking about learning how to surf, Carcavelos beach is one of the best places to take your first steps in this incredible sport. With year-round waves and its distinct surf culture, it's the ideal setting for beginners. But sometimes taking that first step can be intimidating, not knowing what to expect from the experience. For this reason, Carcavelos Surf School brings a guide to what you can expect from your first surf lesson with us.
1. Welcome and introduction
The adventure begins with a warm welcome from our qualified instructors. We will introduce you to the equipment you will use, starting with the neoprene wetsuit that you will wear over your swimsuit and then the surfboard on which you will surf your first waves.
2. Warm-up and safety
Here at Carcavelos Surf School we value safety above all else. It is essential to prepare the body and that is why our classes begin with warm-up exercises. Afterwards the coaches will give an explanation of how to recognize sea conditions, how to deal with different conditions and set backs and how to fall safely to avoid injuries.
3. Basic surfing techniques
Still on the sand, before facing the waves, you will learn the basics of surfing. We will teach you how to lie down correctly on the board, how to paddle and the best technique for the "take-off", that is, moving from a lying down position to a standing position when you catch a wave.
4. Time to face the ocean!
With your board in hand and the explanations fresh in your memory, it’s time to face the ocean! In this first class it is not expected that you will be able to catch waves on your own. The instructors will help you position yourself correctly and catch the first waves in a safe and controlled way. The goal is not to immediately master the board, but to gain confidence and feel the pleasure of gliding over the water.
5. Feedback
At the end of the lesson, we will do a small debriefing where the instructors will give personalized feedback on your strengths and areas of improvement so that you can evolve quickly and make the most of the upcoming sessions.
